KlezKids, Kindernest and
KlezTeens Programs: A Model for Yiddish Continuity
KlezKamp’s unique children’s programs, co-directed by Sarah Gordon and Marilla Wex, provide an opportunity for the next generation to immerse themselves in Yiddish culture, folk arts and community. Our dynamic staff includes professional educators, scholars, graduates of the KlezKamp children’s program, and visual and performing artists. The Kindernest (for children ages 2 to 5) provides a nurturing, energetic and loving environment enriched with Yiddish music, language, games and art. This all-day program includes snack, outdoor play and rest time. Children eat all meals with their families. One parent or family member is required to join the Kindernest program for one period a day for each child enrolled.
The KlezKids program (for those ages 6 to 11) provides an opportunity to create, learn and meet new friends.
Days are filled with diverse art projects, music, dance, puppetry, language arts, sports, yoga, theater and more! The Oomchicks (for ages 2-7) and Youth Orchestra (ages 8-17) offer each child a chance to take part in an age-appropriate klezmer ensemble, learning music by ear. For teens (ages 12 and up), Jenny Romaine will again be directing the Youth Theater Workshop, which will create an original work related to this year’s theme.
Teens are also invited to volunteer as KlezKATs (KlezTeen Assistant Teachers) to share their talents and energy with KlezKids and/or Kindernest. Interested teens should email Sarah at klezkinder@gmail.com.
In addition, many teens, especially those who play instruments, enjoy taking adult classes. Please see the individual listings for the many courses available that might be of interest to those in this age group.
